The Carian Trail (Karya Yolu) is a waymarked long-distance walking route of more than 800 km linking different corners of Muğla province, and the Datça peninsula is part of it. On this tour you walk one of its Datça sections in a day, with a guide. The path winds through pine woods, maquis and olive groves, now and then climbing onto ridges where the coves open up below you. The walk starts among the stone houses of Eski Datça and finishes in Reşadiye.
It's a moderate walk: if you're happy on your feet for a few hours over rolling, uneven ground, you'll be fine. The path is stony and can be slippery in places, so proper walking shoes with good grip and ankle support are a must; sandals and flat-soled trainers won't do. The guide sets the pace to suit the group and stops regularly. If you'd like to bring children, check with the operator first.
Summer heat on the peninsula makes walking hard work, so the tour runs from March to June and from September to November. It doesn't run in July and August, and on hot days in June and September it starts earlier. Bring at least two litres of water per person, your lunch, a hat, sunscreen and sunglasses. When the season allows, the route may drop down to a cove for a swim, so a swimsuit and a small towel are worth the space in your daypack.
Introductions, a briefing on the route and a quick check of shoes and kit.
