Knidos lies about 35 km west of Datça, right at the tip of the peninsula. This half-day tour combines the drive out, a guided walk round the archaeological site and sunset near the Deveboynu lighthouse. You could go on your own, of course, but with a guide, what first looks like scattered stones slowly turns back into streets, temples and harbours.
There are two short stops on the way: at Palamutbükü, a bay known for its fish restaurants, you get a breath of sea air, and at Yazıköy you walk among centuries-old olive trees. At Knidos your guide takes you round the theatre and temple remains of a city that spread around two ancient harbours, and tells the story of Praxiteles' Aphrodite, a statue famous throughout the ancient world. Expect about two hours on foot at the site, breaks included.
It suits anyone with an interest in history, or who simply wants to end the day looking out to sea. The walking isn't hard, but there are steps and uneven stone underfoot, so wear comfortable closed shoes. There's little shade, and the cape can be breezy in the evening: bring a hat, water and a light layer. Because sunset and the site's opening hours change through the year, so does the departure time; the times in the itinerary are for summer. Entry to the archaeological site is ticketed and not included in the tour; the Müzekart museum pass is valid.
Head west by road towards the tip of the peninsula. These times are for summer; in spring and autumn the tour sets off earlier.
