About 14 km from Datça on the road towards Marmaris, Emecik is one of the villages of the eastern peninsula. Its sanctuary of Apollo is far less famous than Knidos, but it's a rewarding stop for anyone curious about the peninsula's deeper past. The area is considered part of ancient Knidos' territory, and the remains here belong to a cult site whose roots go back to the Archaic period, roughly the 7th and 6th centuries BC.
Archaeologists began excavating here in the late 1990s. Their work shows that the sanctuary was laid out on terraces, and that the lower terrace was used regularly for rituals and offerings, especially in the Archaic period. The site stayed in use for centuries afterwards: traces of a Hellenistic temple building and the remains of an Early Byzantine church on the upper terrace have also been documented. Seeing different eras layered on a single hillside makes this small site surprisingly instructive.
This is an archaeological excavation site, so visitor arrangements and access can change, especially during digging seasons. It's worth asking locally in Datça before you go. If you can enter, stay off the walls, keep to any marked areas and leave everything exactly where it is. The visit pairs well with the Kızlan windmills on the same road, or with Balıkaşıran further east, and the area around Emecik is a good introduction to the less touristy eastern side of the peninsula.
